Philippines offers to fly citizens home from Libya

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government raised Tuesday the alert level for its nationals in Libya, offering to fly home 30,000 Filipino workers amid a bloody crackdown on protests calling for an end to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's regime.
Officials earlier said the deployment of workers to Libya, Bahrain and Yemen have been indefinitely deferred due to the unrest there.
Foreign Undersecretary Esteban Conejos said Filipinos living in Tripoli who wish to leave should contact the embassy and ask to be repatriated. He asked Filipinos not to leave without informing the embassy or their community coordinators.
He urged Filipinos in Libya to remain indoors and not go out alone in the streets. If their companies have repatriation arrangements, they are advised to join those repatriation efforts.
"As long as the airport in Tripoli is open, we will fly them from there," Conejos said. Other exit routes being eyed include Libya's borders with Tunisia, Egypt, Chad, Sudan and Nigeria, he added.
Voluntary repatriation only applies in Libya despite parallel protests in nearby Yemen and Bahrain, he added.
Some 15,000 Filipinos are concentrated in the capital Tripoli and areas around it. Another 10,000 are in Benghazi and 5,000 in Al-Bayda and small towns in between, the department's data show.
Some 95 percent of the Filipinos there are professionals including doctors, nurses and engineers while the others are skilled workers in equipment operations and in the oil and gas industries.
The foreign affairs and labor departments have committed a $175,000-dollar fund for the operation and the government has requested the International Organization for Migration to assist in arranging flights for Filipinos wishing to leave Egypt.

Reaction:
As we all know, there are countless Filipinos who work overseas. They are somewhat forced and are unwilling to work abroad but still they choose to leave for the well-being of their loved ones left behind here in the Philippines. They have sacrificed and endured the pain of being away from home.

On the other hand, even though they find it hard and painful being away, they still choose to work, help and provide for those who are left behind. Little do they know, not only they help their own family but also the country through sending home billions of dollars that fuel domestic spending and economic growth.

Knowing that, it is good to see in the news that our government are doing all that they can to help those Filipinos overseas and that they are willing to spend a huge amount of money for the safety of our fellow Filipinos. While watching the news, I overheard people saying “they should not attend and give that much to those who are abroad” it is because they think that they and their own families are the only ones who benefit from the bountiful profit they get abroad, and yet all of us suffer if one of them gets in trouble. Of course, it is also our money that the government use to fund to save our fellowmen abroad. But as we all know we do not know what the future might bring and we have no control over things. So we should not blame those hopefuls abroad. They do not only contribute dilemmas in our country rather they bring profit.

Therefore, I believe they are doing the right thing no matter what others think and I am sure and I truly believe that our government officials are not putting to waste such huge amount and they are giving what the OFWs deserve and has provided them what they are due to receive. It is our responsibility to help one another specially those who are in need, overseas workers or not. And we should all think positively, and stop looking only for the flaws that our country have.

Tourist arrivals up 19% in 2010 despite scares.

MANILA, Phlippines - The country saw a rebound in visitor arrivals last year despite a deadly tourist bus hijack and foreign warnings of terror attacks, the government said on Monday.
A total of 3.45 million foreigners went through the country’s main ports of entry in 2010, up from 2.89 million in 2009, interim Immigration chief Ronaldo P. Ledesma said in a statement.
Data from the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), meanwhile, showed that the number of passengers on international flights to the country rose by 6.4% to 3.59 million last year, reversing 2009’s 6.2% slump.

International passenger traffic, or total inbound and outbound passengers, increased by 6.3% to 7.3 million people in 2010 from 6.87 million a year earlier. The Philippines has long been troubled by an Islamic militant movement engaged in bombings and kidnappings, mainly in the south of the country. The country’s international reputation took a hit in August when a botched police rescue effort to end a bus hijacking stand-off in Manila left eight Hong Kong tourists dead.
The immigration bureau said visitor arrivals fell to 188,028 in September, amid the immediate fallout of the hostage fiasco. But it said the numbers picked up strongly to an average of nearly 230,000 visitors for each of the last three months of the year.

REACTION:

I cannot deny the fact that the country I am living in is not as peaceful as the others and is even really threatening at times. For the past few years, a lot had happened and had caused fear amongst the tourists. Mentioned above are only few events that have caused the comedown of our tourism which in fact has a major role in our economy. We may have weak exports due to poor competitiveness, low capital investments, low consumer and business confidence, low investment in human capital, high unemployment rate but having these God-given places scattered all over our country, this would be a great help for us and to our economy. It would bring profits to our local and regional areas and most probably employment opportunities.

It’s stated that the recent hijacking and the current Islamic movement had resulted downfall in our tourism industry, but just occurred for a short expansion of time, and in fact it had heightened since the past years. Having this kind of after-effect meant that the government had been working and had been doing something for our economy. They had been doing their job and that the current administration had great positive influence to other nations that they had ensured their people to come and visit our homeland once again.

Higher taxi fare to greet commuters in 2011
12/30/2010 | 07:18 PM

Higher taxi fare will greet commuters in 2011.

This, after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on Thursday approved a petition seeking to increase the flag down rate of taxis from P30 to P40.

Aside from adjusting the flag down rate, the fare for every succeeding 250 meters will increase from P2.50 to P3.50, according to a radio report.

In an order signed by LTFRB chairman Nelson Laluces and board member Samuel Julius Garcia, the agency cited as reasons for the fare increase "inflation and the increase of the price index."

The LTFRB said it was about time to hike taxi fares in Metro Manila, as these have not been increased form a long time.

Fare adjustments will take effect mid-January, 15 days after the order’s publication in newspapers.

Meanwhile, Department of Transportation and Communication Undersecretary Dante Velasco also hinted that even the minimum jeepney fare could increase from P7 to P7.50 next year. — With Mark Merueñas, DM/KBK, GMANews.TV

II. Reaction:

As this being on the news today, for commuters like me, we will be having the hard time accepting what has been decided by LTFRB. Although the demand that was being requested by the Taxi Operators and Drivers are understandable, and knowing that the fuel and oil price has been sky rocketing, such office should have come up with something amenable with all the parties concerned more on with the public as this is considerably almost a necessity to everyone.

The flag down will obviously eat up a big chunk of an individual on a minimum daily wage. LTFRB should have addressed consumers’ concern towards the becoming of the taxi drivers before taking this into effect. As most of the drivers would seek for an additional payment before they would agree to send you to your destination. They would even reject you and choose other customers right there and then. The public has been in a dilemma with regards to these and such issues have already been raised to the right office but it is as if no one has been reprimanded.

Increasing taxi fare will surely bring big impact of the public’s inconvenience, and this would at the same time help taxi drivers cope up with their daily income after refuelling and paying the rent. But meeting half way to appease all parties concerned should be more like it. Taxi drive should really be a lot more nice and treat all customers fairly and not even ask for any amount on top of what is on the meter.
